We often hear or read about the financial benefits of estate planning. Planning can protect beneficiaries, children and, of course, money and assets. However, there are also some very important emotional and mental benefits to Estate Planning.
The Ultimate Self-Care
Provides YOU with peace of mind: Planning your estate in advance grants you the peace of mind that your family is protected and taken care of. You can rest knowing critical documents, like wills, insurance, Power of Attorney etc. are completed. You won’t worry about how their finances will be managed because you have already made the proper arrangements for them.
How YOU want it: Let your family know your final wishes. This will be the one last thing they do for you, so help them to honor your requests. It takes the burden off those you love and is part of healing. So if you want to be buried by your favorite Aunt, have everyone wear your favorite color or have your ashes tossed into the sea, put it in writing, and provide the funds, to do so
Another Way to Show Your Love
Provides peace of mind for loved ones left behind: Your family and friends are mourning and can be emotionally and mentally exhausted. This is not the best time to make major financial decisions, have to ask for donations or Crowdfund your funeral. Estate planning should take care of those expenses so they can get through this difficult time.
Access to documentation. Being unable to find your will is the same is not having one. There shouldn’t be a massive search for your will and other important documents. Let your family know where the documents are kept, whether in a safety deposit box or with an attorney. Again, you want to reduce the stress and pain of your love ones. Don’t have them hunting for documents.
Provides clarity of your assets: Who hasn’t heard of, or maybe lived first hand, families torn apart after a love one dies because there wasn’t a will. This can cause infighting over money, family heirlooms, plus anything and everything else. It’s already an emotional time for them. End the additional stress before it even begins by putting your wishes in writing. If you want your favorite niece to have your fur coat or blue tea kettle…SAY SO.
Few of us like talking about our own death, but it is a necessity. We aren’t getting out of this life alive. However, think of estate planning as an act of love. A way to provide and protect your loved ones even after you are gone. Put your wishes in writing, have a will and other documents and discuss your plans with your family. It may seem morbid or uncomfortable, but it will be so appreciated by those we leave behind.
