Mo Money. Mo Problems??

What does it mean to be wealthy to you? A million dollars? Five million dollars? Maybe you think…billionaire? The question is quite subjective. We are constantly being told to have a wealth mindset without really knowing how wealth is defined. Without the definition, can we really say?

So right here I am reminded of what Biggie once said, “Mo money. Mo problems.” However, in my mind I believe it should have been, “Mo money. Same problems… Different scale“? No matter our financial status, we will still all need safe housing, water, food, transportation, clothing, and other essentials. As our money increases, we tend to scale up our lifestyle, sometimes not because we need to, or even want to, but because others expect us to. We chase a dream we think we are supposed to achieve, without really thinking if we want this “dream”. Society expects us to “look the part” even if it isn’t what we really want. But…why?

Just to be clear, I am not speaking against having nice things, living in a safe neighborhood or your kids going to good schools. I am speaking more toward why we tend to think that if we make “big money”, we have to look like we have “big money”. Who are we trying to impress, or convince? If a person is worth a couple of millions, but doesn’t look like it, will that lower his or her net worth? Does it mean the person isn’t happy, doesn’t have peace or joy in their life? Short answer…no.

I could easily go into the evils of society, consumerism, capitalism and a few more “isms”, but no. It’s more important for us to learn to define what wealth is to ourselves. Wealth looks different to everyone in terms of both the amount we think of as “wealth” and what we envision as being wealthy. For me, my definition of “wealth” includes peace (spiritual, mental, emotional). It includes joy. It includes good physical health. And, of course, it includes money. It is living at a comfortable level where I have financial security and stability. The dollar amount I need for me to attain that life probably isn’t the same as what you or someone else would need. That’s ok. What’s critical for all of us is knowing the amount and not judging the other’s amount.

Money is personal and the key is to know how much of it you need to reach your idea of wealthy. When you really sit down and calculate it, the number may be more achievable than you ever thought.
