I believe just about everyone is familiar with dollars stores. How can you miss them? According to Statista.com, in 2021 the U.S. had more than 35,000, and the number is growing. All those stores, PLUS all our “dollars” add up. Dollars stores are now a multi-billion dollar industry.
And, I for one, love it! For me dollar stores, specifically those like Dollar Tree, are a great way to save money.
Here are my three favorite ways to utilize dollars stores.
On Trial
If you’ve ever seen a full-size product that you wanted to try, but did not want to pay the “full-size” price, I get you. You don’t want to make the investment, only to be stuck with a product you don’t like or didn’t work as promised. Dollar stores to the rescue! They sell many name brand products in smaller sizes and trial sizes. Pick up one of these for a fraction of the cost of the full-size, and give it a whirl. If you like it, you can now buy the full-size product. If you don’t, you save yourself a few dollars buying the smaller size, with less product to use up or throw away.
Quick Tip… Calculate the cost per ounce, or cost each, for the product. It may be cheaper to buy multiples of the smaller item than to buy a regular sized item.
Get Crafty With It!
Ever thought you would like to try out knitting, floral arrangement, painting or some other craft? Check out your local dollar store. Many have the supplies you need to begin your crafting journey without the huge investment. Similar to buying other products, the quantity or item will be smaller, but again, if you are just trying the craft out, do you really want to begin with some grand project? Start your hobby with a simple project and see how you like it, then work your way up from there.
Party On!!
My last favorite use for dollars stores is party supplies. It is hard to beat them on table covers, gift bags, basic party themes and the like. No, you will not find name brand party themes there, but you will find coordinating colors you can use to round out your event. Purchase these items instead of, or in addition to, the brand stuff. This is a great idea for kid’s parties. My usual plan is to buy a few name brand pieces for accents and use dollar store table covers, balloons, gift bags and tissue paper. So many birthday related items are thrown away after one use. You don’t have to pay top dollar for that.
So there are my top three favorite uses for dollar stores. I know there are so many more, and if you want to share a few, add your thoughts in the comment section. I am always looking for more ways to save.
